A brief history of Prestwick

  • Prestwick is the original home of the Open Golf Championship
  • Prestwick has a long and proud history - share your stories here!
  • Prestwick Airport has played a large role in the town's history and development

Prestwick has a long and proud history, Here are just some of the major dates in the history of the town.

c983 - Town granted Burgh status

1844 - Freemans Building opened

1851 - Prestwick Golf Club founded in the Red Lion pub

1902 - Prestwick High School opened

1936 - Prestwick Airport first opened

1960 - Elvis Presley lands at Prestwick Airport, en route to the US after finishing his military service

Now it's your turn!

That's the briefest of brief summaries, and hardly covers the most important dates. But this is where you come in. There's lots of interest in local history and lots of local knowledge out there - so why not share it here? To add to the time-line, all you have to do is click on the edit button.

Or perhaps you'd like to start your own article about another aspect of Prestwick history? You can do that, too. There must also be a wealth of wonderful photographs of old Prestwick - maybe even some video of more recent events - and those are more than welcome here.

Post it all here, and let's see if we can really chronicle the history of Prestwick in a way we can all share!

Alex Christie says

Radio Scotland 04~04~09. Welcoming the opening of Stirling's new sports complex. The interviewer then asked if more of these should be proposed for the rest of Scotland. I will attend on the 7th, hopefully if enough people show their support and there is enough forward thinking, the unthinkable may be postponed. Where do people from this part of Scotland train for Glasgow 2014 ?

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
