Prestwick Cross 1954

This is bound to bring back a few memories - a picture of Prestwick Cross, taken by the Evening Times back in 1954.

The snap was taken in June, and even though it's black and white you can tell it was a warm day - just look how lightly people are dressed. Look at how formal everyone looks by today's standards, too - even the schoolkids are smart!

It's funny to see how the Cross has changed - and yet how much it hasn't, too. There's certainly much more traffic these days, though!

Having been away from the area since 1989 I find all photographs from the 1950's till the 1980's very nostalgic.

Using the same old cliches we heard from our elders Prestwick was a much quieter place, life much simpler, much slower, and people were more pleasant to one another.

Living in Canada now I can say that apart from the latter life is quite hectic, but the people still seem to have retained their politeness.

I guess that is how you tell the difference between a Canadian and someone from the USA. So keep the old photos coming please and thank you.

I lived in Prestwick when my stepfather was stationed at the US military base. This was and still is my favorite place in the world. Since leaving there, I have lived all over the world. I joined the US Navy and traveled more. Prestwick still holds my heart. I lived in a large two story house surrounded by a wall. We lived on the top floor. It was owned by an artist and his wife. I can remember taking walks along the esplanade and even on the golf course with the house owner. He was older and such a dear man. We enjoyed hot tea near the esplanade. Not even sure where we went. My mother and I loved to go to tea at the local shops. We loved shopping in town. We moved to Prestwick just before Christmas and all the gifts were in the household goods. Mom went to the local shops for gifts. That was a great Christmas. We were staying in a lady's house and she asked us to join her. If anyone can tell me anything about the big house, I would love to hear from them. I would also love to see more photos of Prestwick in the 1950s. We were there 52-57 if I remember right.

Cheri, I place this Star on Prestwick S1 as the house whose entrance hall is honoured by its presence is trying to raise awareness to another Star, also an artist. Who was recently celebrated by a 250th birthday.
