Lift-off for new air traffic control centre

  • Prestwick's new air traffic control centre has opened its doors
  • Staff at the new centre will handle over 900,000 flights every year
  • The new centre handles flights over the largest area of any centre in Europe
Prestwick's new air traffic control centre at Prestwick has been opened, taking control of nearly half of the UK's flights - around 900,000 per year.

The new centre, replacing a 30-year old centre on the same site will take on around 130 controllers who have moved to Prestwick from Manchester as part of a plan to move the UK's air traffic control to two centres instead of four.

The centre will be formally opened by the Princess Royal on Friday 5th February.

As it opened on Burns Supper weekend, only a few miles from Burns birthplace, is there a possibility it will be named after Robert Burns?
