Man killed, another critical after Prestwick car crash

by Rebecca Garrett

A 52 year-old man has died and a 20 year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital following a road crash near Prestwick.

The collision occurred at around 5.15pm on Saturday, February 11, on the B743 Ayr to Annbank Road at St Quivox and involved a Citroen Berlingo and Renault Clio.

Emergency services attended and the drivers of both vehicles were taken to Ayr Hospital, but the 52 year-old driver of the Citroen Berlingo died shortly after admission.

The 20 year-old driver of the Renault Clio is being treated for his injuries and hospital staff have described his condition as critical.

Extensive enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash and the road was closed for eleven hours to allow an investigation to be carried out.

Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information that may assist police enquiries should contact the Road Policing Department at Irvine 01294 404463.

Rebecca Garrett says

The driver of the Citroen Berlingo, who died in Ayr Hospital shortly after arrival, can now be named as Robert McPike, of Montgomerie Street, Tarbolton. His relatives have been informed.

A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and enquiries are continuing in relation to the events leading up to the crash.

The 20-year-old driver of the Renault Clio is still detained in Ayr Hospital.  His condition is described by staff as stable.

Constable Linda Dolan, Divisional Road Policing, Irvine, is appealing for witnesses.  She said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash and I would appeal to anyone who was driving in that area, who may have seen the crash and or the events leading up to it, to contact Divisional Road Policing on 01294 404436.”
