PRESTWICK BURNS CLUB MEETINGS
The club has held two successful meetings recently. On February 2nd James Allan presented a most interesting illustrated talk on "Old Ayrshire and the Clyde". His numerous slides of castles long since demolished and of villages changed out of all recognition nowadays was well received and his history of steamer services on the Clyde was of great interest.
On March 2nd What could have been a disaster was averted thanks to willing volunteers among the members. The programmed presentation was to be Mr David Hunter with his "Burns Bairns". As there was no sign of them by 7.25pm the club secretary made an urgent call to be told they could not come. The club president explained the problem to the meeting and he was delighted with the number of members who volunteered to provide some alternative entertainment.
Sandy Murdoch presented 3 poems, poignantly he read the first of which was written in response to a family death in Flanders during World War 1 where his relation had been involved in the Paschendale slaughter. His other two were associated with the emigrees from Scotland to Canada many as a result of the clearances. This excellent contribution was followed first by Cronie Past President Campbell Shaw with a cheerful look at food and Scottish catering. Thereafter the club Secretary, Cronie Jim Coutts, presented information on a new book on paintings associated with places mentioned in Burns' works, Cronie Treasurer Ian Moffat was hugely entertaining in his rendition of "The alternative Tam O Shanter" and further cheerful contributions by other Cronies including Tom Taylor, Ritchie Bell, Bill MacIntyre and John Muir ensured that the members had probably at least as enjoyable a meeting as might have resulted had the visitors turned up.
