Prestwick battle breaks out after Weatherspoon submit super-pub plans

  • Pub wars are set to break out on Prestwick's Main Street after the Weatherspoon application
  • JD Weatherspoon has applied to open a 4000sq ft super-pub at the former Woolworths store

Prestwick's Main Street is set to be the battleground between pub operators - after pub giant JD Weatherspoon submitted a new application for a 'super pub' on the site of the former Woolworths store.

However, the owners of Elliots, Buzzworks, have hit back with an application of their own for a major new pub at the old Broadway cinema - in direct opposition to the 4000sq ft proposal from Weatherspoon.

This is the second round in the battle between the operators - Weatherspoon's submitted a planning application earlier this year, but later withdrew.

Charlie Taylor says

Prestwick needs a Wetherspoons - reasonably priced real ale and food.  We don't need another expensive lager seller which is simply a clone of a pub already in Prestwick.

Jack Wilson says

Prestwick Main Street already has pretty severe parking problems as do surrounding streets. This is already sadly apparent in side streets adjacent to the existing "Elliots" in evenings. To allow another big pub on Main St. seems rather silly BUT if the go ahead is given for one such outlet it would be better that this be for Wetherspoons to increase competition as Buzzworks already have two pubs in  locations on that street.

Marilyn Raw says

thinks Weatherspoons would be great for Prestwick......anything would be better than the horrendous shop front that was Woolworths it makes the street look derelict...and think of the jobs it would bring for local kids

Roy McInnes says

Having lived in Canada for 21 years now I can only claim annual visitor status now.  If I had to choose my vote would go to Weatherspoons, however, no matter which way the cookie crumbles, the winning pub should be made to provide ample free parking, more than enough for the pub.

Seems to me that there is a prize for the winner in the revenue from the pockets of the local people, otherwise there would be no interest from either party.

So I say make the winner pay up front.  Make them provide free parking.  Make that free parking more than ample.  Make them help in the congestion problem.  Make that free parking available for all local residents.

Both properties, as I recall have space at the rear.

Prestwick cannot stand to have more street parking problems nor more traffic congestion.  Don't let either business walk away with the obvious profits the are fighting over without putting something in for the good of the community.

Lastly, make them provide a smooking area, a place to have a smoke and a beer, like the days of the not too distant past when we all had the right to enjoy life as we wished.  Sorry non smokers but smokers have rights too.
