Prestwick residents told to 'get used to it' as sewage floods street

Residents on Grangemuir Road in Prestwick have been told they will have to get used to sewage spilling down the street by Scottish Water chiefs, who claim they don't have cash to cure the problem.

Residents have been calling for action on Grangemuir Road, which regularly spews raw waste, but water bosses admit their hands are tied - because they don't have the money to help.

Scottish Water claim it would take millions to upgrade their network and stop human waste trailing on to the pavements.

Re Sewage on Grangemuir Road.

I am disgusted to hear that the residents of one of the oldest burghs in Scotland, one that, throughout the eons of Scottish history, has given no trouble of consequence to the rulers of Scotland/England worth a mention in any history book that I have read, now have to suffer this atrosious indignation.

Perhaps it is time for the people of Prestwick to show some mettle. Perhaps time to shovel the stuff into pails and ship it to Edinburgh and dump it in a prominet place outside the new parliament buildings.  Or on the doorstep of the cabinet ministers who refuse to divert some of the funds being spent on making their offices glorious edifices.

Seperating humans from sewage is one of the most immediate duties of those who collect the peoples taxes.  These are the same people who could not house or feed themselves were it not, at least in part, for the taxes paid by the people of Grangemuir Road in Prestwick.

If this type of protest is not felt to be the way to go then at least hit them where it hurts.  Band together as a group and put all your taxes that you have control of into a community bank account.  Send notification to Edinburgh of your willingness to pay these taxes as evinced by the due payment of the monies into this bank account.  Explain that the monies will be realsed as soon as ground is broken and work begins on the sewage problem.

Continue to protest always announcing that the money is there awaiting application of your basic human right to have your money spent on this health issue.

Explain to the authorities and get the word out in the media that if your needs are not taken care of within a reasonable time that common sense must prevail and a rational and sensible judgement has to be sought through the European Human Rights Commission.

Furthermore, that as a group, due to the time it will take to have your suit heard by the Commission, you may be forced to put the monies held in the communtity account to work in the hire of a private company to suck out the drains and clean the accumulated surface midden from a health and safety point of view. A duty currently being shrugged off by all of your elected representatives even as a basic health issue.

Go to it folks, get truly involved and elect a spokesman/woman for the community and give them something to think about.  In this modern world of communication you could stir the ire of many expats and even raise financial support from all over the world.

Remember Scot's wha hae and give them heck.

The nearness to sea level under the railway bridge in Grangemuir Road means that in heavy rains combined with tide fairly high it has always flooded. Of course there is fault in the sewage system there which would have been sorted long ago  were it a more high profile and affluent area.

However a lot of the fault goes back to the days of Kyle & Carrick Council at the time when the Railway renewed the bridge. If the local Council had pushed then the bridge could have been made wider, incorporating a footpath and sewer work could have been tackled at that time.

To address Jack's comment re the flooding under the Grangemuir Rd bridge.

In the seventies a storm water tank was installed in the grounds of the old golf course at a level low enough to prevent the flooding under the bridge.  This tank relieved the flooding under the bridge quite successfully and when I left the area in 1989 was still doing its job.

What happened?  Is the tank and its sewage removal system still in operation?  Has the are now been saturated with new housing rendering it unable to cope?  If so was nothing put in its place?

Perhaps Jack could advise me.

Thanks.          ................           Roy
