Prestwick 'superpub' a step closer as Wetherspoon's wins planning battle

  • A superpub for Prestwick moved a step closer as planning chiefs gave the go-ahead

Plans to build a 'superpub' in Prestwick have moved one step closer after planning chiefs granted permission for JD Wetherspoon to build its venue on the Main Street in the former Woolworth's premises.

However, the battle for objectors, who were out in force against the plans at this week's meeting - is far from over, with the company still needing to win the approval of South Ayrshire licensing bosses.

The plans still face fierce opposition from Prestwick publicans, and has split opinion in the town.

Jack Wilson says

One should view the impartiality of objectors to the proposed Wetherspoon pub in Prestwick with great scepticism.  One is a gentleman whose company has applied more than once to open large licenced premises in the old Broadway cinema property so perhaps his objection is a very biassed one. The more so as his company operate two licenced premises in Prestwick already.

The about to retire owner of a Prestwick hotel seems more unbiassed unless he is acting as a supporter of some of the many other fellows who operate existing hotels, restaurants or pubs in town.

What did surprise me about the planning consent granted was that no worries seemm to have been raised regarding the likelihood of many more vehicles being parked in central Prestwick which already suffers chronic traffic and parking problems.
